I miss having a partner to dance with, to travel beside and to cook for, and someone to share the planning, the getting-lost, and the unexpectedly authentic experiences in places neither of you expected.
I’ve lived an unusual life that’s made me genuinely curious about people — London, Hong Kong, Poland, Berlin, Amsterdam, Singapore, Vietnam. That kind of journey makes you warm to strangers, direct in conversation, and good at small talk. I learned to listen well, and be more interested in other people than myself.
I’m quite traditional in some ways, especially in the respect I show towards women. But unorthodox in others, such as my openness to different cultures and experiences.
For the last few years I gave everything to my students and my lecturing. But I’m recently semi-retired, and for the first time in a long time I have space for slow mornings, long dinners, weekends away, and being fully present with someone rather than half-thinking about next week’s lecture schedule.
I feel things deeply. I’ve loved well and been hurt, and I’ve spent some contented years happily alone. But I find myself wanting more now — not just companionship, but someone to grow with rather than simply grow old. That might mean cooking together on a Sunday, reading in a park, partying somewhere we probably shouldn’t still be at our age, or planning an ambitious life changing trip to some far off location.
